Exploring Nerikomi: The Art of Layered Clay (3 hours)

Delve into the exquisite world of Nerikomi in this immersive class designed to introduce participants to Nerikomi, the ancient Japanese technique of layering colored clay tocreate intricate patterns and designs. In this workshop, we will learn to prepare colored clay by mixing pigments into a neutral clay body.

We will then experiment with different layering techniques, such as millefiori, stacking, slicing and recombining colored clay tocreate intricate patterns and designs. This class is open to beginner and experienced ceramic artists - some experience with hand-building would be ideal.

Materials:

All necessary materials and tools for Nerikomi, including clay, colored pigments, tools

for shaping and sculpting, and access to kiln firing, will be provided. Participants are

encouraged to bring their own design ideas or sketches for their Nerikomi projects.

Work produced will be bisque-fired and then glazed with a clear glaze after the

workshop, and will be available for pick-up 4-5 weeks.
